Why do I need to pay for college?

I've been studying in public schools my whole life and we never really had to worry about paying any fees. Im about to finish high school and my parents are now worrying if they can send me to college because we can't afford it. If the government can offer free education upto high school how come college education needs to be paid?
Not all courses need special equipment or training. Some are just a series of lectures and on the job trainings that other cmopanies provide. Why can't some courses be offered for free like public high school?

High school and other basic education is far from free, the working taxpayers pay very dearly for the education you received, if you want more, you have to actually contribute to the extreme costs that have already been paid up to this point to educate you.
