Is it a good idea to join the US army reserves?

I've been thinking about joining the US army reserves as a step to becoming a physician.  I heard that the military can cover your expenses for college and that they have good programs for medical students.  Im not sure how it works though.  Do I have to serve while studying or will finish college first then spend a given number of years serving in the military?

Also, if ever I get accepted do I get to choose the college I go to, and does that mean that I get accepted automatically?  Or do I still need to go through the application process for the college that I/they choose?
