The world of computers is one where you can really be able to see how time changes things. I used to remember when I first used computers; the media I used to save things was a big soft black floppy disk. Now people use CD’s to save the data.
However to save files on a CD, you would need to have a CD-Rom or DVD-Rom drive. A CD-Rom drive can burn data on a CD while a DVD-Rom drive can burn data on a DVD disk.
The difference of DVD from a regular CD is that DVD’s are capable to store more data. A DVD can store 4GB while a CD can store 650 to 700 MB.
When deciding to purchase either a CD or DVD Drive, it is best to find one that has faster speed. Some say that a faster speed is better, but it is only suggestible if you burn lots of CD’s.
Currently, DVD drives are lower in price too. So it is suggestible to just get a DVD drive rather than a CD driver. DVD drives are really great ways to watch movies too. This is because they provide greater resolutions. There are CD drives though that can read DVD’s.
As mentioned earlier, speed could be considered important by some when burning. There are speeds that are 32, 48 and 52X. Don’t be fooled though by their markings, because this numbers only indicate the maximum speed these drives can reach. The best thing to consider is the average sustained transfer rate. But that rate is sometimes not reported on the box.
Access time is another thing worth considering. Access time is usually measured in milliseconds. 85ms is already sufficient for a CD-Rom drive.
Cache is also important to consider like those in hard drives. The ranges are 64K to 512K and up to MB for CD burners. The best range for a CD drive is usually 256K, but it’s better to get 512K. For CD burners, it is better to get one with 2MB. This helps avoid bad burns.
Here are some more tips when getting a CD or DVD drive. The higher the speed you choose the faster it will spin. When the drive spins faster there is more chance that it may fail. Try to get slower ones to make it last longer and also read the CD quieter.
The tow brands worth looking at are Plextor and Lite-on. For a person with a smaller budget the latter is suggestible. Plextor is one that could drain your pockets but have superior quality.
