If you want to rank highly in the search engines, then Search Engine Optimization will be necessary. Sorting the facts from the fiction in regard to SEO can be difficult, especially for beginners. Here are some common SEO mistakes that you should avoid:

The overuse of keywords is a bad idea. Using keywords repeatedly will be seen as spam by the search engines and will result in your page begin dropped. Use keywords effectively and precisely.

The choice of keywords you use in META tags are critical. There are many software programs available that will help you find the most searched terms for your line of business. The more direct you are with your META tag keywords, the more successful you will be in attracting paying customers.
Use the title tag effectively. Your most important search phrases should be at the very beginning of title tags. If you must include your company name in the title tag, do so at the very end. Search engines give more notice to the information that is placed first in title tags. Your title tags can keep you raked high in the search engines or cause your site to be dropped. Use the correct information.

Each page in your web site should optimized for different keywords. Never repeat META descriptions or titles on your web pages. When designing your site you should treat every page as if it were the most important and optimize it with unique keywords and phrases that are relevant to your business.

Many new Webmasters think that the fancier the web site, the more traffic they will receive. To the contrary, if your site does not contain useful content the major search engines will not recognize it. Place relevant text on every page within your site so that the search engines will notice. Additionally, if your site contains mainly pictures and graphics and very little useful information, you guests may perceive you as unintelligent and unprofessional.
