If you have a mental or medical disability, or will be traveling with the disabled, you can make the trip a lot easier and less stressful if you make a few advance preparations. People with any type of disability often find many obstacles to overcome, especially if traveling by air. Here are some tips that can make your trip go smoothly:
Provide your airline or travel agent with advance notice if you or a loved one will require assistance upon arriving at the airport. The airline should be happy to be of assistance through the airport and the screening process. If you will need an assistant or companion to accompany you through security checkpoints, alert an airline representative in advance and obtain a gate pass for your companion.
Limits for carry-on bags and personal items do not apply to medical or necessary supplies for persons with disabilities. Pack your medications separately and make sure they are plainly labeled. You will want to pack your medications in your checked baggage to avoid exposure to x-rays. Additionally, make sure all your baggage has identification tags with your name and any medical conditions you may have.
Persons with disabilities are allowed to bring aboard any items necessary for their mobility or safety. This includes animal helpers, prosthetic devices, walkers, canes, and numerous other items. Check with your airline in advance. You should be able to get a detailed list of the items that will be allowed in your circumstance.
Persons having mental or medical disabilities can travel easily with a bit of advance planning. Make the necessary arrangements with your airline and get information about the assistance that is available to you. Your travel plans will go smoothly and you will be assured of a pleasant trip.
