Have you been offered a great deal on a vacation or cruise, but you cannot seem to get all the important information until you pay for the entire trip? If so, you may have encountered a travel scam. In general, travel scam operators will not give you complete details on great travel deals until you have supplied them with your credit card number or sent them a check or money order. Once you do pay in advance for the entire trip, you may find that there are so many restrictions that it is nearly impossible or quite a bit more expensive to actually take the trip. It is sometimes possible to get a refund, but in general it is best to wait until all the details of the trip have been stated before paying for any travel deal.
Be very cautious about letters or calls stating that you have won an incredible vacation. Never give out your credit card information to an unknown company promising you spectacular travel deals. You should get complete details about any travel opportunities in writing before you make any payment. This information should include cancellation and change penalties, the total price, and any restrictions that may apply. Resist calling a 900 number for information on travel deals. High-pressure sales presentations that insist on immediate responses or requests for your employment and income information should be avoided. Also be very suspicious of any vacation opportunities that require you to wait 60 days or more before you can take the trip.
Sports travel packages such as trips to the Super Bowl or other major sporting event should be fully investigated before you make any type of payment. While some of these offers are legitimate, there are many unsuspecting sports fans that have been scammed out of thousands of dollars for accommodations and seats that never existed. You should also be wary of travel discount cards that are offered for a fee. These cards promise to save you money on all airlines and at any hotel. In reality, these cards may only be accepted at a few chosen hotels, if any at all. There are great travel deals to be found. Just be very cautious about spending money upfront for a trip that gives you very little detail or requires you to make an instant decision.
