Self-administered breast examinations entail not only a physical inspection of the breast but a visual exam Ð as well.
Visual examination
For the visual, disrobe from the waist up. In front of a mirror, allow arm to dangle at the sides. Visually assess breasts while standing directly in front of the mirror then pivot to each side to make a mental note of your breasts normal appearance. Dimpling, puckering, changes in the symmetry, shape or size of the breasts are signs to look for. Look for indications of inverted nipples (turned in nipples). Be sure to study the appearance of breast with the arms in two alternate positions:
A) >> Hands elevated overhead with palms pressed together
B) >> Hands placed at the hips
Physical examination
During a self-administered physical examination, breasts can be inspected either in a reclining position or while in the shower. If you prefer to lay down to conduct the test, be sure to lay on a flat surface (the bed or floor). In the shower, work up a soapy lather and then apply onto the breasts. The foam coupled with the wet skin will enable fingers glide easier over the breasts.
The Clockwise Self-breast Examination
To examine the left breast, placing the left hand behind the head and move the right hand clockwise around the breast in a circular motion working slowly inward until the nibble is reached. Feel for lumps, unusual feelings in th tissue or any type of discharge.
Do not forget to check any tissue surrounding the breast, including the tissue under the armpit. During the self breast examination, us the pad of the index, middle and ring fingers to firmly yet gently massage the breast clockwise. (Repeat the same motion on the right breast).
