The indications of a male mid-life crisis is usually quite obvious and apparent, a male might purchase a high end sports car, start spending more time in front of the mirror, or even swap his wife for arm candy. The clichés associated with a mid-life crisis are no longer limited to the male gender. As the baby boomers approach their mid ages, more women and men are struggling with the life change.
Midlife Crisis usually hits around the age of 40 and is a common occurrence and is actually considered part of human maturing, but a midlife crisis can make you feel unhappy and make you feel the need for counseling from someone other than your porsche dealer, this is a fine and if you feel you need to see a psychologist, go right ahead and do so.
The Hormonal Shift
According to medical experts, the blame may be hormones. The decline of hormones is attributed to midlife crisis. During the life altering stage, men’s testosterone levels begin to diminish due to a lack of biological production. For men, the signs include a waning of overall endurance, stamina and drive along with sex hormones
According to clinical psychologist, Judith Sherven, the hormonal changes account for women’s self-worth. Quite common in women who have been stay-at-home wives, the desire to tend to family matters is replaced with a new need to innovate and conquer the new. Psychiatrists agree with the female hormone theory. For women a similar metamorphosis transpires: a turn down of the sex hormone, estrogen. Alternatively, as estrogen dwindles down for women, testosterone increases. The feelings of extra energy, gumption and ambition are based on the increase of testosterone.
Psychiatrist Robert Tan finds mid life crisis hormones to be the leading reason many women start a business, become involved with projects and groups outside of the home or even return to school. Although many medical experts concur regarding the physiological during mid age changes, not all experts agree that hormones impel the midlife crisis. Either way the hormonal changes are deemed, it is another aspect of the change in life. These midlife crisis feelings can occur naturally or they can be brought on by other factors, but don't make this simple crisis turn into a major crisis by destroying your credit, job or family relationship.
