Starting from 2010, the Spirit of the Red River Cruises was the only tour company based in Shreveport that has provided cruises along the Red River. This cruise company provided cruises from late March through early November on a regular basis, as well as by appointment during the winter season. While taking a glimpse of the sights along the Red River, you will also be able to learn about the Great Raft, a enormous logjam which is believed to have started forming around the year of 1,100 A.D. close to the area where Shreveport-Bossier is in our days.
Cruise Itinerary
River cruise tours on board the Spirit of the Red are generally available on every Thursday through Sunday from March to November, with a wide variety of choices of departure times during the day. The last cruise tour will leave in the early evening. From late November to early March, the cruise tours will be available by appointment if the weather conditions will permit it. The cruise tours will take place on the Red River and the twelve-mile Cross Bayou of Shreveport. The one-hour-long round-tours will leave from the dock which is located in opposite location with the Sci-Port Science Center on Clyde Fant Parkway.
Cruise Sights
Along a Spirit of the Red River Cruise, you will be able to learn more about the history of this river as a logging hub and its transition to the economy of our modern times fueled by the industry of riverboat casino. You will be able to see some of the traditional paddle-wheeler cruise boats which now will serve as floating casinos along the Red River. Guests will often spot any types of wildlife in the habitats of the wetland, and birds like kingfishers, blue herons or egrets. Sights made by the hand of man will sit alongside natural ones; they will include various historic bridges: the swing-type KCS & Southwestern Railroad Bridges; the Texas Street Bridge, which is an important part of the highway system; and the Oil Railroad Swing Bridge, which has been built in 1900s.
The Spirit of the Red Cruise
The Spirit of the Red may accommodate over 30 guests. A spacious deck which can be used for observation will provide uninterrupted panoramic views of the various sights along the Red River, while large windows will allow for sightseeing the surroundings from the interior of the boat. The captain of the cruise boat, Sandy Jackson, is a boating enthusiast with navigating experience for over thirty five years.
