Buying an Exotic Pet: Tiger

Recently made famous by heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson, having a tiger is becoming more and more popular among exotic pet lovers who have money to burn. Tigers are thought to be the most dangerous of exotic pets and have been known to kill their trainers or owners. It difficult to get a permit to keep a tiger as a pet if you live in the United States for this reason. If you are able to get a permit you will have to stay in compliance with many regulatory rules and regulations as the animal control inspector will stop by frequently for you and your tiger's safety.

Before purchasing a tiger of your own, you should volunteer at a zoo that has adult tigers to learn first hand the care required for these beautiful and dangerous animals.

Tiger cubs like to cuddle with humans and can be fed milk with bottles like a human child. Tigers need to be taken for walks regularly and play around the house. Tiger cubs have been known to drag furniture from one side of the house to the other as a way of playing with it. While the tigers are cubs they will play with other pets, but keeping them with other pets after they outgrow them will probably end in disaster for the smaller pet. Tigers will need a very large cage as they grow older that is a bare minimum 100 feet long and thirty feet high with a swimming pool and sun bathing areas.

As tiger cubs get older their weight increases greatly and they will be difficult to manage on a leash, the lack of these daily exercise routines can make them aggressive and become more dangerous as they start to feel like a caged animal. To help minimize this frustration try playing games with the tiger regularly and bring them new toys to play with. Make sure that when you are not at home that the tiger is secured within the cage so they do not escape and eat the neighbors.

Tigers shed their baby teeth at around eighteen months and grow their four inch long canines which is usually a bit scary to most owners which makes them more unlikely to give the tiger the exercise they need by going into the cage to play with them, which also makes them more dangerous.

Always be sure to keep a pet tiger well fed and their cage clean as disease and odors will set in on a weekly basis if not cleaned properly.

Everyone is different, but make sure you are ready for a tiger before you purchase one, if not then just settle for hanging out with tony the tiger at breakfast while you eat your favorite box of frosted flakes.
