Tips on how to avoid having a messy desk at work.

1.  You should sort through your mail everyday and throw junk mail away.

2.  Record all notes in a notebook instead of on scraps of paper that create clutter and may get lost.

3.  Compile a folder or notebook with material that you reference often.

4.  File all documents at least once each week.

5.  Maintain a calendar for dated items such as meetings, deadlines and appointments.

6.  Do not leave partially completed projects on your desk while you are not working on them.  File them until you need to resume working on them.

7.  Remove everything that you do not absolutely need from the top of your desk.

8.  Create a file for material that you need to read and regularly sort through the file to eliminate unnecessary documents.

9.  Items that are on hold pending action from someone other than you should have a separate file where they are placed.

10.  Dust and polish your desk weekly as this will make you less willing to add clutter on top of your desk.
