Things to remember in case of fire. Stop, drop and read.

Make sure you have smoke detectors and they work.  Ensure they remain in working order by testing them monthly and replacing batteries per manufacturer's directions.

Plan your fire escape in case of an emergency.  This should entail at least two exits and a place to meet.  Practice your plan.

Pay attention to cigarette smokers by providing deep ashtrays and wetting the butts before throwing them in the trash.

Be safe when you are cooking by keeping the area clear of combustibles and making sure that your clothes are not likely to catch on fire.  NEVER leave your stove on and unattended.

Make sure there is room between heaters, especially space heaters, and anything that can burn.  Also, never leave space heaters or portable heaters on while you are away from home or after you go to bed.

Keep lighters and matches away from children.

Pay attention to your electrical appliances and outlets.  Don't overload extension cords and replace any electrical cord that is out of repair.

Should you get burned, run cool water over the area for ten to fifteen minutes.  Do not use butter, grease or ice.  If it blisters or is charred, see a physician immediately.

In case of a fire, crawl under the smoke.  Since smoke and poisonous gases rise, the air nearest the floor is cleanest.

If you do catch on fire, do not run because that will enliven the flames; stop, drop and roll to extinguish the flames.
