1.  Maintain contact with your child's instructor in order to be aware of the amount of homework that is turned in, as well as the quality of the homework they are doing.

2.  Schedule a time for doing homework.  Decide how long it should take and cushion that time a little bit to allow for breaks and questions.

3.  Have your child divide their homework assignments into what they can do alone versus what you need to help with.  Only help your child with the part that they cannot do by themselves.

4.  Postpone fun activities such as watching television or having friends visit until their homework assignments are completed.

5.  Set up a homework desk or specific area for your child to study that has the proper utensils and minimal distractions.

6.  Praise your child for doing their homework assignments, especially when they accomplish a major task.

7.  Make sure that you are available when your child does their homework so that you can assist them in case of confusion about a certain topic.

8.  Review your child's homework assignments for completion, but do not correct it unless you check with the teacher first because teachers can use the pattern of errors to find where a student's misunderstanding lies.

9.  Sometimes study groups are very useful.  If your child does study with several classmates, ensure that they are studying.

10.  Take breaks to get food, drinks or to go to the bathroom; however, require that all homework is completed every day.

11. Consider using a free homework hotline.

12. Always remember there are many benefits of doing homework so do not do it FOR your child, just help them wtih their homework assignments.
