10 Tips to Protect Children from Household Poisons

1.  Store all household chemicals that are potentially harmful in a locked cabinet.

2.  Read the label because some products can be dangerous if too large of a quantity is used yet ineffective if used in too small of a quantity.

3.  Remove children, pets and their toys before using household chemicals, and keep them away from the area until it has dried or for as long as the label recommends.

 4.  Buy household products that are packaged for child-resistance.

 5.  Never place household chemicals in a different container that a child may believe is food.

6.  When you need to apply an insect repellent to your child, read the directions first, and avoid applying on open wounds, their face or hands.

7.  If your home was built before 1978 and you plan to renovate, have your home tested for lead-based paint, but do not try to remove lead paint yourself.

8.  Be aware that landlords and sellers are required by law to disclose any known lead hazards, but you should question them about it in case they are not aware of it.

9.  Wash children's hands, toys and clothes often in case they are contaminated with household chemicals.

10.  Regularly clean household surfaces to make sure that all residues from dangerous chemicals are removed before your children play in that area.
