10 Tips to Make the Cheerleading Squad

1. Talk to current and former cheerleaders from the squad so that you know what to expect; preparation reduces anxiety.

2. Talk to the coach during a practice for try-outs but make sure what you say is relevant or useful in some way- you want to stand out in her mind in a positive way.

3. Run through the try-out routine mentally & visualize yourself completing it perfectly, over and over again.  If it is in your mind, your body will have an easier time doing it.

4. Dress appropriately.  Most squads will provide instructions detailing what to wear: follow them.  If dress code is not provided, wear something comfortable to workout in, such as gym shorts and a t-shirt.  Your hair should be pulled away from your face, neck and shoulders and you should not wear any jewelry.

5. Bring water and snacks.  You need to stay hydrated to avoid any embarrassing fainting spells.  Snacks are a good idea in case your blood sugar drops (especially if you do get dehydrated) or the practice is particularly long.

6. Find out what the expectations are to make the squad. You need to be prepared to perform what the coach and judges are looking for.  If minimal requirements are given, try to exceed them.  For example, if a standing back-handspring or better is requested but you can do a back-handspring/layout combination, go for it but make sure that you can really do it.  Stick to what you know.  And if there are specific requirements, i.e. back-handspring, do what is requested.

7. Arrive on time (or early if possible).  If you are late, you look irresponsible and unreliable.  In this sort of team sport, one person missing will affect an entire routine.

8. Stretch well before the practices and the try-out so that you don't hurt yourself.

9. Practice, practice, practice!  Attend all practice sessions and meet up with others trying out before or after practices if possible.  The more you do it, the better you'll do it.

10. Always smile and maintain a positive attitude.  Cheerleading is an entertainment sport and you should always show enthusiasm.  Shouting out encouragements (Go Bears! or We're number 1!) in lulls in the routine is usually a good idea but do not just scream Whooooo!
