10 Tips to Get in Shape in No Time

1. Use the stairs.  An escalator or elevator may be easier but it's not necessarily quicker so work those calves and burn those calories.  

 

2. Tighten those tummy muscles.  Inhale and tighten your stomach muscles while you're sitting or standing; this is equivalent to doing a sit-up.   If you did this sporadically throughout the day, imagine how many sit-ups you would have done.

 

3. Use a hand-basket instead of a shopping cart at the market to increase muscle tone in your arms.  Make sure to switch from hand to hand to maintain balance in your muscle growth. 

 

4. Get your groove on during household chores!  Exercise can even turn the dullest house chores into fun.  Dance with your mop instead of listlessly pushing it across the floor or shake it with the washer during the rinse cycle! 

 

5 .Utilize downtime.  Don't just be a couch potato-do crunches, push-ups, lift weights or walk on a treadmill while watching your favorite programs.

 

6. Wash your own car and mow your own lawn instead of paying someone else to do it.   Burn calories and save money at the same time. 

 

7. Try new social activities.  Instead of chatting with your friends over dinner, why not take a walk or go bowling?  Don't take the kids to the movies; take them to the park.  Do something physical! 

 

8. Change your eating habits.  Everyone knows that healthier foods just don't taste as good, so compromise with your taste buds:  If you must have pizza tonight, forgo the usual 3 slices and have 1 slice with a small side salad.  

 

9. Most of us crave caffeine and consume empty calories galore in soda.  Ideally, we would all drink water; however, if the craving for caffeine just cannot be denied, reach for the diet alternative: caffeine without the calories. 

 

10.  Don't crash diet or overextend your workout!  If you starve yourself or overburden your muscles, you'll never dedicate yourself to your routine.  You may lose weight but you'll never keep it off.   Start slowly and work your way up.   You want to view this as a lifestyle change, not a quick solution.  Don't let setbacks discourage you.  You CAN do this!
