10 Tips to Advocating an Important Issue

1.  Decide what is important to you to change and choose your issue.

2.  List ways to resolve the issue that you choose.

3.  Find supporters of the same issues.  Research online to find an organization or other individuals who are working on the same or similar issues, and collaborate your ideas.

4.  Plan your strategy.  Are you looking for change on a local level?  Or do you need to take this issue to the state or even the federal government?  Who is going to object to your plans for reform and how can you change their minds?

5.  Develop a mission statement which clearly identifies what you want to do and how others can get involved.

6.  Educate the public by attending civic meetings or writing letters to the local newspaper.  Make sure others are aware of the issue as well.

7.  Encourage supporters to join in your cause by contacting their representatives or governors about the issue.

8.  Offer to attend a public hearing and relate the story of why you got involved in this issue.  Personal experiences can be very influential.

9.  Be persistent.  It may take time, you may be rejected several times, but if it is important enough for you to be concerned, you can make a difference.

10.  Pay attention to political candidates' messages.  Their proposals often dictate the laws that are made.  Make your vote count by choosing the candidate that most closely agrees with your views of the issue at hand.
