1. Visiting the Colosseum is a "must" when traveling to Rome. The architecture is amazing and a tour inside will allow an even more impressive view. It was built in only 10 years and made to hold 50,000 spectators with a complex lower antechamber to hold lions and sacrifices. Travel back to the days of the gladiators in this amazing structure. 2. Vatican City is near Rome and houses many of the most praised pieces of art known to man. There are many museums and churches to visit, particularly St. Peter's Basilica which houses Michelangelo's famed Sistine Chapel. Make sure to wear appropriate attire because Vatican City has a dress code. 3. Piazza Venezia contains many sites of interest, such as the Palazzo Venezia, a museum containing medieval and Renaissance artwork, a monument to Italy's first king, Vittorio Emanuele II and Trajan's Column, a memorial to the war between the Roman Empire and the Dacians. 4. Ancient Italy's religious attitude is evident in the Pantheon, a humongous temple erected to worship the gods. It is one of the best preserved sites in Rome and possesses one of the largest dome ceilings known to man. 5. An interesting site to visit is the ruins of the Forums of Rome which are being excavated. The Forum of Caesar, the Forum of Vespasian and the Forum of Trajan are amazing insights into Rome's past and are beautiful to see, especially in the night, when they are lit up. 6. The Arch of Constantine, located between the Colosseum and the Forums, is the best preserved of the Roman arches and provides an unequaled perspective of the history of ancient Rome. 7. Galleria Borghese has an extensive collection of art in its museum, particularly sculptures and is worth the effort for transportation and the necessity of a reservation. 8. Palatine Hill is the legendary spot where Romulus and Remus founded Rome. It was also home to the elite of Roman society and this is evidenced by the ruins of many of Rome's emperor's palaces. It is obvious that this site was picked for the fantastic view that this hill provides. 9. There are many temples erected throughout Rome that are worth visiting, such as the those dedicated to Saturn, Juno and Venus. Besides the gods, there are several temples that were dedicated to emperors who were seen as god-like, such as Caesar. Although many are in ruins, they are still magnificent. 10. Before leaving Rome, all travelers must visit the Trevi Fountain and toss a coin over your shoulder to ensure a return to Rome.
