10 Tips to Ace an Interview

1.

Dress for success.  Your physical appearance is a large part of a first impression.  If you look professional and well-groomed, you are more likely to appear confident and together .

2.

Revise your resume before your interview.  Make sure your objective is appropriate and everything is spelled correctly.  You should actually re-read your resume because spell-check systems will not catch all errors.  Make sure you have a printed copy available.

3.

Write a personalized cover letter for the interviewer if possible.  Ensure that it is tailored to the job you are interviewing for as much as possible.

4.

Arrive 15-20 min early.  Punctuality is a key element for most hiring managers.  Arriving early tells them that you are prepared, eager and reliable.

5. Have a list of references with you in case it is requested.  Most jobs will specify if they want references but you should always make sure you are prepared and this is one way of doing so.
6. Maintain eye contact and smile when appropriate.  Eye contact shows that you are paying attention and that you being honest and a smile is likely to be regarded as friendly or likeable.  Also watch your other body language.  If you are slouching, you seem lazy; if your arms are crossed, you may appear uncomfortable or angry.  It is best if you sit with a straight back with your hands in your lap.
7. Think before responding to questions.  Take a moment to gather your thoughts so that you can express what you want to clearly and avoid awkward misunderstandings.
8.  Avoid filler words such as "um", "like", etc.  They make you sound unintelligent and unsure.
9.

Make sure you actually know the meaning of words before sounding like an idiot.  If you’re not sure the definition of a word, use a different one.  If possible, prepare some industry jargon before going into the interview but be positive of what you are saying.

10.

Prepare questions about the organization mentally beforehand.  If you have some idea of what they do and can ask for elaboration on a specific point, it shows that you know what you are doing.
